  • Michael's Bar & Grill

    7101 Manchester Ave. Maplewood

    314-644-2240

This Maplewood institution is both a Greek restaurant and a neighborhood bar & grill. Sit in the bar and munch on T-ravs or the excellent hot wings - crisp-skinned and plenty spicy - while you watch the Cards or Blues, or take a table on one of the two levels or the covered outdoor patio and enjoy braised lamb shank over bucatini pasta. (It's like extra-thick spaghetti that has had a hole threaded through the middle.) Michael's burger is one of the area's best: thick, juicy and full of beefy flavor.

  • Mihalis Chophouse & Onyx Bar

1603 McCausland Ave., St. Louis Richmond Heights

    314-333-3301

CLOSED Blue-collar Dogtown rarely sees splendor like what's on display at Mihalis, from the complimentary weekend valet service to the split-level bar/lounge and the live music. The menu's heavy on the beef, all of it prime, all hand-cut to order. Best in show might be the tenderloin seasoned with Tellicherry peppercorns and a Cognac-amped Madeira sauce. Seafood and rack of lamb comport themselves well, as do classic steakhouse starters like French onion soup, bouillabaisse and a beef tenderloin salad. Request a booth if you can; the intimacy, along with the amber-hued lighting and seductive surroundings, guarantees that you'll have fun and look good - even if your wallet takes a hit.

  • Momos Ouzaria Taverna

630 N. and South Road University City

    314-863-3511

A fun, fashionable, fantastic Greek boîte tucked away along the western fringe of U. City, Momos offers much in the way of Greek classics (dolmades, kebabs, gyros, orzo and ouzo) and even more in the way of nouveau-Grecian fare (lima-bean salad, baked phyllo with a heavenly chocolate sauce). The food is chic yet earthy, and extremely well executed all around. Momos also boasts a truly eclectic, hand-picked wine list worth exploring, plus a house concoction that's half-sangria, half-mead and wholly delicious. A great addition to the city's restaurant scene.

  • Nico

6525 Delmar Blvd., St. Louis University City

    314-727-0200

The “younger brother” of popular and critical Soulard success Franco eschews its older sibling’s French-bistro leanings for a broader Mediterranean flavor. Dishes range from tapas like fried almonds to housemade pappardelle in an Italian pork ragu to lamb spiked with a fiery North African harissa sauce. The lamb burger, seved with a fried egg on top, is superb. For a pleasant summer evening, grab a seat on the patio, order a “Jack Buck” (gin, Aperol, ginger beer and lemon) and enjoy all the people watching the Delmar Loop has to offer.

  • Noodles & Company

    1784 Clarkson Road Chesterfield

    636-728-1580

Saying Noodles & Company serves noodles is kind of like saying Albert Pujols hits home runs. The Denver-based fast-casual chain treats the humble noodle like the king of all food (which for much of the world it is). You get ample portions of perfectly cooked noodles mixed with sautéed-to-order fresh vegetables, flavorful sauces and meat or tofu. Best of all, you can customize your meal to your heart's content, creating the expected (an "Indonesian Peanut Sauté" with chicken, say) or the, um, unique ("Wisconsin Mac & Cheese" with shrimp?). Whatever you choose, for not very much money -- and in very little time -- you'll enjoy a tasty and pretty dang healthy meal. See listings for additional locations above and under "South."

  • Olio

1634 Tower Grove Ave. St. Louis - Tower Grove

    314-932-1088

Olio sits in a brilliantly re-purposed service station in the McRee neighborhood. With the Midwest’s top sommelier Andrey Ivanov at the helm, you can expect a topnotch wine list, which Olio has, including some odd varietals and a great Rosé made just for them. But the cocktails, too, are first rate. The menu changes each month, and bar manager John Fausz pays homage to classic cocktails from every era. The drink list is an eloquent little history lesson on the origin of each selection. Olio has nothing on draft, but it does offer a carefully curated list of beers in bottles and cans. Be sure to order a bite from the small kitchen, which is visible from the bar. From snacks like marinated olives, toasted nuts and hummus to heartier fare like tartines and rotisserie chicken, the food is every bit as good as the drinks.

  • Olympia Kebob House & Taverna

    1543 McCausland Ave. Richmond Heights

    314-781-1299

An expansion a couple of years ago transformed this longtime purveyor of pastitsio, moussaka, dolmades, baklava and other Greek favorites from relatively small and cozy to, well, Olympian. Great gyros and fabulously potent Greek coffee, and be sure to try the rice pudding when it's available.

  • Omar's

10111 St. Charles Rock Road St. Ann

    314-429-6881

Inside its small restaurant in St. Ann, Omar's serves a large menu of Mediterranean and Italian dishes. On nice days, guests can dine on Omar's patio. The varied menu includes items such as hummus, shawarma and gyros, as well as toasted ravioli, chicken Parmesan and plenty of pasta choices. Omar's also cooks up pizza, which is available as Chicago deep dish, St. Louis and New York style. The restaurant also offers delivery, carryout and catering.

  • One 19 North Tapas & Wine Bar

    119 N. Kirkwood Road Kirkwood

    314-821-4119

This Kirkwood restaurant covers two of St. Louis' favorite recent dining trends: small plates and wine bars. Unlike most "tapas" restaurants locally, some dishes here show Iberian influence, such as grilled asparagus with melted Manchego cheese and romesco sauce. In general chef Christopher Delgado's kitchen shows strong technique and careful attention to detail, as evidenced by beautifully grilled lamb chops in a cucumber-yogurt sauce, or a rich, perfectly seasoned crawfish étouffée. For a self-proclaimed wine bar, though, the narrow selection is in need of attention, given the preponderance of labels that can be found at most area grocery stores.

  • Pan D'Olive

1603 McCausland Ave., St. Louis Richmond Heights

    314-647-8000

Pan D'Olive takes over the swank Franz Park address that Mihalis Chophouse vacated a few years ago. The space still looks like a million bucks, but this Mediterranean restaurant (mostly Italian, with a few Greek, Turkish and southern French touches) carries a decidedly less upscale price tag. Only a few entrées cross the $20 mark, and more than dozen appetizers are priced $10 or less. Dishes include shareable plates like hummus, fried calamari and arancini. Entrées feature crowd-pleasers: pastas, a massive lamb shank, a charbroiled rib-eye steak. A humble dish of baked cannelloni conveys surprising soul thanks to its hearty Bolognese sauce and properly made béchamel.

  • Pappas Grill

3501 Lemay Ferry Road, South St. Louis County Mehlville/ Oakville/ Lemay

    314-416-0707

"Pappas Grill CAN NOT assume responsibility for steaks that are cooked Well-Done." So reads the menu's reproachful admonition preceding the beef selections at this South County steakhouse. Consider it fair warning. If you like your filet mignon merely waved over the flame, though, give the place a shot. You'll find a few Mediterranean dishes, too, such as gyros and a salad garnished with feta and briny black olives.
  • Petra Café & Hookah Lounge

3177 S. Grand Blvd. St. Louis - South Grand

    314-772-4888

"We smoke, f*ck off" is spray painted above the bar at Petra Café and Hookah Lounge on South Grand. With that kind of attitude, it's readily apparent that Petra is not your traditional hookah joint. Petra has a variety of hookah flavors, including rose, honey, vanilla latte and several house blends. The prices are very reasonable: $10 for a small hookah, $13 for a large. They have a small menu of inexpensive Middle Eastern dishes ($5 for a chicken pita and a mound of hummus) that they serve up to an hour before close, and sometimes even later. Something that's totally unique to Petra: They give you a cup of bubbles and the top half of a cut-off plastic water bottle. Customers dip the open end of the bottle into the bubbles, drag off the hookah and blow the smoke into the bottle top, creating baseball-sized bubbles filled with perfumed smoke that waft above the crowd like crystal balls uninhibited by gravity.

  • The Purple Martin

2800 Shenandoah Ave St. Louis - Soulard

    314-898-0011

Long-time Fox Park residents Brooke Roseberry and Tony Lagouranis dreamed of creating a neighborhood gathering place. They've finally gotten their wish with the Purple Martin. Located in a rehabbed corner storefront, the restaurant is a quaint, casual bistro with Mediterranean and North African fare. Appetizers such as skordalia, a tangy garlic dip, and zeal, a lima-bean-based Berber specialty, serve as zesty starters, while the lamb shank with roasted tomatoes and potatoes is a satisfying entree. Make sure to save room for dessert. The Napoleon, layers of buttery puff pastry, sweet cream and macerated blackberries is a decadent end to a meal. For those who prefer an adult beverage as a nightcap, the Purple Martin boasts a creative cocktail menu. Its namesake drink, a concoction of Fitz’s grape soda, Malibu rum and lime juice, is a sweet and refreshing treat.

  • Remy's Kitchen & Wine Bar

    222 S. Bemiston Ave. Clayton

    314-726-5757

One of three very successful Tim Mallett-run restaurants, Remy's (named for his kid, not the Cognac) emphasizes wines by offering "flight" tastings of three different glasses to go with Mediterranean-themed meals of tapas-style "small plates" or standard-entrée "large plates." The complimentary black-olive tapenade served with bread is a real treat.

  • Spiro's Natural Bridge

8406 Natural Bridge Road, Normandy North St. Louis County

    314-382-8074

Spiro's is an old-school neighborhood restaurant where the waiters sport tuxedoes and greet their customers by name. Many of the dishes, such as the kasseri cheese appetizer, are sliced, sauced, flamed and plated at tableside for your entertainment. You can order Greek favorites that have become part of the American culinary repertoire, such as Greek salad, spinach pie, gyros and baklava, or you can branch out and try stuffed grape leaves, pan-fried smelt, broiled lamb chops and custard-filled phyllo pastry. Allow enough time to linger over several courses and to accommodate service that sometimes lags. See listings for other locations under "South" and "West County." Each location has a unique feel, with the West County restaurant predictably more upscale than the other two.

  • The Terrace View

808 Chestnut St. St. Louis - Downtown

    314-436-8855

The café within the terrific, playful Citygarden sculpture park rises above the cliché of the usual museum restaurant. The dinner menu offers restrained - and reasonably priced - portions structured so that you can build your own tasting menu or just stop in for a snack. The dishes, from local restaurateur Jim Fiala (the Crossing, Liluma, Acero), feature Mediterranean flavors and as much locally sourced produce as possible, including the "50-Mile Salad," which takes its ingredients from a 50-mile radius. Look for lots of good seafood (oven-poached striped bass) and pork and lamb dishes. A selection of grass-fed, organically raised steaks will please carnivores.
