  • Sweet Basil Thai Cafe

903 Pine St. St. Louis - Downtown

    314-621-8810

CLOSED This small Thai café at Ninth and Pine streets offers a quick and inexpensive solution to the downtown lunch-time dilemma. The sparse but sufficient menu features a few appetizers at a friendly price and an assortment of around seven familiar Thai entrees. Below the soft sound of the background music, diners can hear the sizzle of their recent order rushing from the kitchen. Options available include curry dishes, rice dishes and noodle dishes, such as a spicy panang or the standard pad Thai. Each entrée comes with the choice of chicken, beef, pork or tofu and is brought to the table in a hurry.

    6170 Delmar Blvd. University City

    314-862-6868

The granddaddy of Supatana "Pat" Prapaisilapa's six area Thai restaurants - and one of four in the Delmar Loop - Thai Café offers classic Thai dishes in a cozy wood-paneled dining room. The menu weighs in at a mere 100 choices, with dozens of stir-fry options (including pad thai, of course), several different curries, larb and other Thai salads and the classic Thai soup tom kha gha. For a different beginning to your meal, try tod mon, delicious deep-fried fish cakes. The kitchen will adjust the spiciness to your liking, but for a more authentic Thai experience, just order your food "hot."

  • Thai Country Cafe

6223 Delmar Blvd., University City Delmar/ The Loop

    314-862-0787

Thai Country gleams as a sterling example of the genre. It has everything: exotic aromas, food that lives up to them, sycophantic service, walls stocked with ethnic-looking artifacts -- all for only a slight yank on your wallet chain. Start with vegetarian spring rolls or the chicken satay. Move on to a highly recommended sliced beef with garlic and black pepper, a pad thai or anything with red curry and coconut milk.

  • Thai Gai Yang Cafe

    6250 Delmar Blvd. University City

    314-862-4400

This Delmar Loop fixture (one of four Thai restaurants within a couple of blocks, all owned by Supatana "Pat" Prapaisilapa) features many of your favorite Thai curries, salads and noodle dishes, but you might want to take your cue from the joint's name. Gai yang refers to grilled or barbecued chicken, and Thai Gai Yang Cafe's - marinated in garlic, coconut cream and spices before being roasted - is terrific. Tom kha gai (soup with chicken, galangal, lemongrass, lime leaves and red chile) brings sinus-clearing heat. The kitchen will gladly adjust the heat in your dishes, but the menu is blunt: You can't return what you don't like - or can't handle.

  • Thai Kitchen

    8458 North Lindbergh Boulevard Florissant

    314-695-5039

Thai Kitchen’s menu consists of familiar Thai dishes, though the recipes are uniquely Andie Ongartsutthikue’s, having been passed down in her mother’s family for generations. Her version of the northern Thai noodle soup khao soi, for instance, is spicier than others. The warm heat is more haunting than assertive, sneaking up on the back palate and lingering. Meanwhile, a tangier, more tomato-forward presentation of curry is the base of the gang quah shrimp, a rich, brothy concoction meant to be served over rice. The star ingredient is pineapple, cut into chunks and warmed by the broth. $-$$. Open for lunch and dinner Tuesday through Sunday.

  • Thai Pizza Co.

608 Eastgate Ave., University City Delmar/ The Loop

    314-862-4429

A popular spot for Wash. U. students with little cash but lotsa gastronomic adventurousness, Thai Pizza Co. provides some clever twists on the fare you find at the the joint's three sister Loop restaurants. The pies -- available with a thick, doughy crust or a matzo-like thin one -- come topped with chicken satay, hoisin, peanut sauce, green onions and assorted other staples from the motherland. Additional offerings include noodle bowls (some with curious ingredients like barbecued ribs), traditional pad Thai, and not-so-traditional spring rolls, big and thick. The décor is a departure from standard St. Louis Thai, with brighter colors and a more welcoming vibe. A good pick for a quick bite at a low price.
  • Thai Sawadee

    171 Hilltown Village Center Chesterfield

    636-728-0308

Thai Sawadee might not be radically different from the St. Louis area's many other Thai restaurants, but its menu features more focus than most. For example, only four curries are available, and you can't mix and match curry sauces and meats. No worries: The beef panang curry is outstanding, rich and spicy. The house specialties are worth a look, including pineapple fried rice served dramatically in the hollowed-out cavity of half a pineapple. Nam tok beef features the tasty combination thinly sliced grilled steak tossed with lime juice, chiles and scallions. The friendly staff and peaceful ambiance make this a winning spot.

  • Wang Gang Asian Eats-St. Charles

2009 Zumbehl Road St. Charles County

    636-352-1191

CLOSED A fast-casual concept featuring solid renditions of popular Chinese, Chinese American and Thai dishes. In spite of the goofy name, the décor is restrained, and the focus is on the food. Old warhorses like crab rangoon and General Tso's chicken get makeovers; the former focused more on crab than on cream cheese, the latter not as sweet or gloppy as at most Chinese joints. The Thai red curry is good, and the pad thai is better (that is, less peanut-heavy) than many local Thai restaurants' versions.
