Part of the Michael Del Pietro family of restaurants, which includes adjacent restaurant Sugo's Spaghetteria, Via Vino serves up a brief menu of small plates, such as olives, a cheese plate, gnocchi and a fried Jerusalem artichoke. Bigger plates include steak au poivre, Chilean sea bass and a pork chop. As its name suggests, Via Vino also offers an ample selection of wines by the glass and the bottle.
  • Vin De Set

2017 Chouteau Ave. St. Louis - Midtown

    314-241-8989

The rooftop at Vin de Set alone is enough to get us there, but we stay for the 75 wines that pair so beautifully with its French cuisine. Enjoy escargot or buttermilk duck confit whilst sipping French, Mediterranean or American wine. Bottles aren't cheap, but there are more than 30 wines by the glass, too. Did we mention that gorgeous view?

  • Water Street Cafe and Cocktail Bar

    7268 Manchester Road Maplewood

    314-646-8355

A restaurant and cocktail bar from the brother-and-sister duo of Gabe and Maria Kveton. Gabe handles the drinks, which include a vintage cocktail of the week, drawn from the book Vintage Spirits and Forgotten Cocktails. Maria's menu focuses on small, simple dishes, like salt-cured salmon and deviled eggs. The most intriguing dish is the flatbread, which changes weekly to reflect the latest, freshest produce procured down the block at the Maplewood Farmers' Market.

4436 Olive St. St. Louis - Midtown

    314-289-9463

Jazz, blues, wine and food. That's what you can look forward to at Wine Press, the newish (c. 2008) wine bar on the edge of the Central West End. Their red and white wine selections feature offerings from the old world and new, and there's an equally global beer list too. The Wine Press menu features several smaller plates, such as mushrooms stuffed with cheese, artichokes, garlic, onions and pecans, and asparagus with brie and prosciutto, as well as larger plates that combine smaller bites, including a cheese plate and bruchetta sampler. They've also got one of the coolest happy hour deals we've seen: From 5 to 7 p.m., you can get a bottle of wine from their hand-selected list plus an appetizer to share for just $25. Live music most weekend nights -- and some weekday nights, too.
