  • Courtesy Diner

    3155 S. Kingshighway St. Louis - Dogtown

    314-776-9059

The Courtesy Diner, like the Dude, abides. Whether you want a hearty breakfast to soak up last night's drinks, a late-night slinger to forestall the morning hangover, the best fast-food hamburger in town or a fix of cheap coffee and jukebox blues to stir your brooding soul, you'll find it here - just like you would have found it twenty, thirty, even forty years ago. Best of all, the Courtesy Diner is not an attic for Americana, and it isn't some kind of shrine to the working class; it's a working restaurant (and be prepared to pay with cash).

  • Crown Candy Kitchen

1401 St. Louis Ave. St. Louis - North Downtown

    314-621-9650

Curbside available only. Call (314) 621-9650 to place your order.

This nearly century-old north-side landmark serves up a mean BLT and makes some of the sweetest candy in the city, but now that summer is here, it's the ice cream we're interested in. The scoops of rich (14 percent butterfat!) ice cream can be ordered in malt, sundae, newport (a sundae with whipped cream and nuts) and banana split form, or just go with a single scoop. Favorite flavors include Ozark black walnut and black cherry. There's also the legendary milkshake -- if you can drink five in half an hour, they're all free. But more than the treats, it's the retro atmosphere and old-timey feel that will put a smile on your face.

  • Eat-Rite Diner

622 Chouteau Ave. St. Louis - Downtown

    314-621-9621

"Eat Rite or Don't Eat At All." So it says on the coffee cups (and the souvenir T-shirts) at this no-frills 24-hour greasy spoon amid the industrial wasteland between downtown and Soulard. Folks come from miles around to fill up on the breakfast-and-burgers menu: bar-hoppers and club kids finally coming down from their late-night-into-early-morning highs; factory workers and blue-collars getting off graveyard shifts; curious newcomers who've heard about the bizarro vibe that pervades these cramped counter-only environs. To call the food at Eat-Rite cheap is an understatement -- six burgers (real-size, not White Castle-size) run $4.50. And many swear by the Eat-Rite's redoubtable slinger (for the uninitiated, that'd be fried eggs, hash browns and a burger patty, avec chili).
