  • Half & Half

    8135 Maryland Ave. Clayton

    314-725-0719

Call in your order for curbside pickup to either of Half & Half's locations [Clayton, (314) 725-0719; Webster Groves, (314) 942-1617]. Order for delivery through Postmates or Grubhub.

Half & Half serves both breakfast and lunch, but the breakfast menu here - available throughout the day - is unquestionably the star, as owner Mike Randolph (who opened the midtown pizzeria the Good Pie) gives the Most Important Meal of the Day a contemporary bistro treatment. You can pair your eggs with pork belly; the steak in your steak and eggs is a hanger steak. Coffee service, featuring beans from Kaldi's, is extraordinary, from the "ordinary" drip brew to grounds filtered through cloth so as to capture the maximum amount of their essential oils.

  • Jax Cafe

2901 Salena St. St. Louis - South City

    314-449-1995

Jax Café, the Benton Park breakfast and lunch spot that serves “eclectic comfort food with a twist," represents what happens when a big-name chef leaves behind his rock-star status in favor of family and the purity of cooking. Whereas the menu offerings are familiar, chef Brian Hale has amped them up with his special touch, elevating dishes beyond just eggs and sandwiches. Breakfast highlights include decadent hazelnut pancakes, encrusted with brown sugar brulee and drizzled with Meyer lemon crème anglaise, and a smoked-salmon take on the classic eggs benedict with a potato leek cake taking the place of an English muffin. Lunch builds on the eclectic-comfort-food theme with dishes like truffle fries – so generous in size that the portion could easily serve four – drizzled with truffle oil and liberally sprinkled with Parmesan cheese and rosemary sea salt. The Cuban panini is also excellent, featuring sweet ham, smoked pork and whole grain Dijonaise pressed between two slices of fresh crusty bread. Jax also serves a small Sunday brunch buffet where Hale rotates the offerings to showcase some of his specialties such as biscuits and gravy or seafood cocktail; as a bonus, it includes a build your own bloody-mary bar. The prices are reasonable, and the atmosphere is casual. Expect an uncomplicated vibe, casual and friendly service, and creative twists on familiar breakfast and lunch classics.

  • Kolache Factory

    2604 S. Brentwood Blvd. Brentwood

    314-968-2253

What's a kolache? It's kinda like a Hot Pocket, except it's light and -- here at the only Missouri outpost of this mini-chain -- freshly made. A well-chosen selection of these Czech morsels make for a quick, yummy, cheap and guiltless fast-food meal. Choose from pepperoni and mushroom, ranchero (ham, egg, cheese and jalapeño), club (ham, turkey, bacon and cheese) or Philly cheese steak. Sweet kolaches, which are usually served open-face, include chocolate cream cheese, cherry and lemon. Next time it's your turn to bring doughnuts to the office, throw your co-workers a twist with a selection of these bad boys.

  • Kopperman's Delicatessen

386 N. Euclid Ave. St. Louis - Central West End

    314-361-0100

Like the first fragile buds on Forest Park's trees or Mike Shannon's first home-run call from spring training, the first crowd on Kopperman's patio is a sure sign of spring. Not that people-watching in the Central West End is all that Kopperman's has going for it. The St. Louis institution dishes up simple, hearty breakfast fare, from bacon and eggs to French toast to bagels and lox. The sandwich menu isn't chopped liver, either - though you can, in fact, order chopped liver, as well as one of the city's standout roast beef sandwiches ("Love at First Bite"), beef tongue and the "Ike and Tina Tuna."

  • Lucas Park Grille

1234 Washington Ave. St. Louis - Washington Avenue

    314-241-7770

Lucas Park Grille was the first restaurant to call Washington Avenue home just after the 2004 loft district revitalization. The swank hub of Washington Avenue nightlife might not be synonymous with foie gras and $40 steaks, and if it's sedate, mannerly high-end dining that you seek, look elsewhere. Its perfectly executed new American cuisine is served up on large and small plates in a large and elegant industrial space filled with stone, copper and brick and several warm fireplaces for a cozy winter spot. An award-winning wine list includes over 300 selections. On the weekends, the bar is bursting at the seams with togged up revelers sporting their finest and throwing back calorie-friendly beer and rainbow colored shots. You'll find an electric atmosphere and some of the best people-watching in town.
