  • Lulu's Local Eatery

3201 S. Grand Blvd. St. Louis - South City

    314-357-7717

St. Louis food-truck-goers are already familiar with the name Lulu’s Local Eatery; these mobile peddlers of vegan cuisine have been rolling around town since 2012. Following the success of their truck, husband and wife owners Lauren “Lulu” Loomis and Robert Tucker expanded their operations to include a brick-and-mortar corner storefront on South Grand, featuring the dishes that diners came to love from their food truck. Lulu’s may be vegan, but patrons are treated to hearty, satisfying cuisine that appeals to even the most committed carnivore. Buffalo cauliflower bites are like vegetarian boneless buffalo wings, complete with ranch dressing. Another appetizer, the avocado boat stuffed with Mexican-style quinoa, is satisfying enough to be a meal unto itself. The buffalo veggie burger and sweet potato falafel are also excellent sandwiches, but the star of the menu is the Buddha bowl, filled with stir-fried vegetables and thick, silky udon noodles. Dine on the patio, amidst the organic herbs and vegetables -- you just might be sitting next to tomorrow’s special.

  • Shangri-La Diner

2201 Cherokee St. St. Louis - South City

    314-772-8308

Miss MoKaBe's brunch? It's on at the Shangri-La, a kitschy-cool hangout started up by MoKaBe's brunch mastermind, Patrice Mari. Come in on Sundays for crème brûlée French toast, freshly made strawberry-lime-orange juice, scrambled tofu, fruit pie and more. Or stop by on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays for an à la carte breakfast or lunch to take the edge off an afternoon of Antique Row browsing. The anti-aging menu means lots of yummy salmon, beans, tofu, spinach and fruit. But Mari's not afraid of a little dessert, either; she makes a cupcake called Hostess with the Mostess. It is, and so is she.

    2203 S. 39th St. St. Louis - Tower Grove

    314-771-4278

Husband-and-wife owners Cbabi and Reine Bayoc operate SweetArt as a vegetarian and vegan restaurant, a bakeshop and a gallery for Cbabi's artwork. The lunch menu is brief: sandwiches, chili, a soup of the day. The standout dish is the "Sweet Burger," a veggie burger like no other - a mixture of nuts, chopped vegetables and textured vegetable protein that's as satisfying as a burger without trying to replicate the taste or texture of meat. The grilled cheese sandwich is very good, as is the three-bean chili. Save room for dessert, including cupcakes, cookies and other baked goods.

  • Terrene

33 N. Sarah St. St. Louis - Central West End

    314-535-5100

Though it's pronounced "tureen," like the soup bowl, Terrene's name is meant to evoke earthiness - and both the name and the restaurant do. Terrene wears its social and eco-consciousness on its sleeve, noting in many a menu sidebar how the cooking and drinking water is filtered, how the kitchen scraps are sent to local compost heaps, and how organic foodstuffs are brought in whenever possible. Terrene also just so happens to crank out very tasty, adventurous food at prices a notch or two below ridiculously posh. The salads are robust and exceptional, the "tofu on a stick" is neat, and believe it or not, the chicken breast entrée is a pan-seared knockout. Despite the high-concept food, the space itself is warm and inviting. A worthwhile establishment - from the ground up.
