  • Five Star Burgers

    8125 Maryland Ave. Clayton

    314-720-4350

Five Star Burgers in downtown Clayton is a new venture from Steve Gontram, best known to St. Louis diners for his time as the owner and chef of the restaurant Harvest. Though a burger joint, Five Star Burgers displays the same passion for quality ingredients and presentations that made Harvest so acclaimed. The burgers are excellent, especially the green-chile cheeseburger (a recipe from Gontram's father in New Mexico), and the kitchen knows what a medium-rare temperature is. Other sandwiches include burgers made from lamb, bison and turkey, and there are two vegetarian options. Crucially for a burger joint, the fries are top-notch, and the list of craft beers is excellent.

  • Hamburger Mary's

3037 Olive St. St. Louis - Grand Center

    314-533-6279

A small national chain, Hamburger Mary’s is a self-styled “open-minded bar & grill for open-minded people” — and perhaps the only chain to court the LGBT community. The décor is deliberately campy, the menu rife with double entendres (like the “Guacamole B.J.” burger, which also features bacon and Monterey jack cheese). The vast array of burgers does share two common traits: they’re huge and overstuffed with toppings. Ordering isn’t unlike picking out a new car — multiple models available in different trim levels. If none of the three ground beef options suit you, there’s also ground turkey, a grilled chicken breast or a black-bean patty. Sides and starters are the typical crowd pleasers: fries, soft pretzels, T-ravs, etc.

Appetizers include fried mushrooms, jalapeño poppers and toasted ravioli. Humphrey's also offers bigger bites, including hot dogs, salads, a pork fritter and burgers (veggie burgers are available). • IHOP

6301 Chippewa St. St. Louis - St. Louis Hills

    314-457-1340

IHOP, you hop, we all hop for pancakes? A 24-hour mecca for St. Louis flapjack lovers from tots to blue-hairs, the now-acronymed International House of Pancakes isn't just a one-trick pony. Besides pancakes in a dizzying array of flavors from chocolate chip to carrot cake (plus seasonal flavors like pumpkin and eggnog), the never-closed breakfast emporium serves everything from omelettes and waffles to chicken-fried steak and pot roast, plus giant carafes of coffee at any hour of the day. Founded in 1958, the pancake house is almost old enough to order off its very own senior menu, a privilege reserved for those 55 and up. IHOP's just a skip and a jump away on Voice Places.
  • It's a Better Burger

    4881 Mexico Road St. Peters

    636-922-7706

The former St. Louis Rams coach ventures into the restaurant biz with this take on the “better burger” craze that’s sweeping the nation. The burgers here are slabs of ground beef cooked till well done. You can add cheese and/or bacon, and there is a fixings bar with the usual suspects. A decidedly no-frills experience.

  • J & A's Bar & Grill

10 N. Newstead Ave. St. Louis - Central West End

    314-534-0335

You can call J & A's Bar & Grill a dive. (It's smoky, low-key and highly affordable.) You can call it a sports bar. (The TVs are always tuned into the game, and if a St. Louis team is playing, pitchers are just $5.) Just don't call it your typical Central West End nightspot, because J & A's Bar & Grill is most certainly not that. This is a place for drinkers who like to drink and sports fans who like to watch the Cards. And there's nothing wrong with that. While there's a full menu, it's more a convenience than the reason why people come here.
