  • Absolutli Goosed Martini Bar

3196 S. Grand Blvd. St. Louis - South Grand

    314-771-9300

You might be the straightest Glenn Beck fan in St. Louis County with zero interest in the fabulous life, but you'd still be an idiot to write off Absolutli Goosed. This award-winning gay and lesbian lounge has one of the most expansive martini menus in the city, with names like Pussy Galore, Banana Hammock and Dixie Normous, as well as a laundry list of sips that won't make your grandma blush. Not sure what to order? Belly up to the smooth sea-green bar and ask for a recommendation. The obliging barkeep might even treat you to an off-menu drink like the Basil Smash: grapefruit vodka, lemon, simple syrup and muddled basil.

This Dogtown mainstay serves traditional bar fare, such as burgers, wings, fried mushrooms and a variety of sandwiches. Patrons can also enjoy the old Blues memorabilia throughout the establishment that celebrates its past as part of a Cheltenham tradition.

Halls is a regular stop for soccer teams and families, especially on Tuesdays when kids eat free. But at night, B. • Babe's Tavern & Garden

3215 Ivanhoe Ave. St. Louis - South City

    314-647-3436

Babe's just may be the holy grail of St. Louis bars. Other than exposed brick and a shiny wooden bar, this tiny south-side haunt has a decidedly no-frills atmosphere (they've got Golden Tee and, for decoration, a Heineken mirror) - but who needs accoutrements when the crowd is this colorful? Voted "Best Bar Bar" by the RFT in 2009, Babe's is an intimate neighborhood bar that draws regulars six nights a week. The stated capacity indoors is just 49, although that number doubles or even triples when the large patio is packed with people, celebrating Cardinals victories or softball team losses.

  • Bar 101 Soulard

    1724 S. Broadway St. Louis - Soulard

    314-621-5400

Some bars are content to offer clean glasses and booze, without gimmicks or an ounce of entertainment. Not so Bar 101; this Soulard joint "gets it all in," to borrow a term from the hip hop playbook. Outside, there's a giant sand volleyball court and about a million square feet of patio space with a large outdoor bar and fire pit. Inside, flat screens blare with in-house adverts and food porn that's bound to make your beer-filled tummy rumble, along with myriad games including basketball and a feat-of-strength boxing game. It's either a mini-Dave and Busters or an adult-friendly Chuck E. Cheese -- only instead of fake gold coins, your prize will be booze. Or maybe a stunning victory on the volleyball court. The menu features traditional bar food (cheese sticks, nachos) alongside unexpected choices (spinach-artichoke Rangoon, battered gator).
  • Bar Les Frères

7637 Wydown Blvd., St. Louis Clayton

    314-725-8880

Restaurateur Zoë Robinson Pidgeon and her go-to chef Ny Vongsaly have brought a touch of Paris chic to the tiny Clayton confines of their new venture, Bar Les Frères. Though the cuisine is resolutely old-school French, the vibe is fun and the décor (including sixteen pairs of deer antlers looming above the bar) downright funky. The brief menu includes such beloved classics as lobster bisque (brimming with actual lobster meat), duck confit and steak au poivre. The highlight might be the Toulouse-style pork sausages, aggressively seasoned: a perfect blend of pig, salt and spice.

  • Bastille Bar

1027 Russell Blvd. St. Louis - Soulard

    314-664-4408

If you're looking for a smoky gay bar in which to wile the night away, the Soulard Bastille may be your new favorite hang. The owner closed the kitchen in order to skirt the 2011 smoking ban, and has since hung giant cigarette sculptures outside the bar that read "This house is a'smokin." The walls are covered in flair, from a buffalo head on the wall to Rocky Horror light-up signs and rainbow-colored icicle lights adorning the ceiling. The bartenders are extremely friendly; don't be surprised if they ask you -- no, make that, order you -- to belly up to the bar for mandatory shots.

  • The Beerhouse

777 River City Casino Blvd., South St. Louis County Mehlville/ Oakville/ Lemay

    314-388-7777

One of the more surreal dining experiences in St. Louis: a good ol' American bar and grill done up as a Disneyfied Bavarian beer hall, complete with waitresses costumed in fetching frocks a la Snow White. Part of the River City casino, the menu hits the basic goods, including tasty, oversized burgers, wings and ribs (ask for the sauce on the side). But there is also German fare, including a terrific rendition of the classic sauerbraten (here called "German Pot Roast"), tender braised beef over yummy spaetzle and braised red cabbage. Best of all, the friendly bartenders are skilled at a quick pour -- especially when the carnage you suffered at the craps table is written all over your face.

  • Behrmann's Tavern

3155 Meramec St. St. Louis - South City

    314-353-9626

Behrmann's Tavern is the second oldest bar in St. Louis still doing business under its original name (Failoni's being the first). Open on the southside since the mid-1930s, this small neighborhood bar is well steeped in history. There's a vintage bowling machine that's survived since the 1950's, faded black and white photographs showing the evolution of St. Louis baseball stadiums and monuments and a pizza oven next to the bar that may or may not be original to the place. You're not likely to find young people at the bar, which is a shame, because the wizened regulars have stories to tell.

Nestled in the shadows of the A-B Brewery on the south end of Soulard, Big Daddy's offers a little bit of everything for the south city barfly. The downstairs bar features dj's spinning the latest jams every weekend and ice cold beers and tasty appetizers make it a great place to kick back a watch the game.
