  • Benito's Gelato

    1760 Clarkson Road Chesterfield

    636-536-1050

Gelato is ice cream, except it's better. In Italy, gelato is eaten every day, three times a day, after every meal, often as a meal itself. Or at least it should be. At Benito's Gelato, a rainbow of creamy, bright-colored ribbons of gelato keeps cool behind the glass counter. Made fresh each day by slowly freezing all the ingredients, the gelato at Benito's comes in a variety of available flavors of fresh fruits, nuts, chocolates and liqueurs. Espresso and coffee drinks are also available.

  • Bissinger's at Maryland Plaza

32 Maryland Plaza St. Louis - Midtown

    314-367-7750

The beloved St. Louis institution has received a 21st-century makeover. Its new location in the Central West End's Maryland Plaza is a sleek, modern dessert bar. The menu divides desserts into light-, medium- and full-bodied selections. The last group offers a chocolate terrine as dense as a neutron star and a surprisingly good version of the ubiquitous flourless chocolate cake. Medium-bodied desserts include a silky chocolate pot de crème, and the standout among the light-bodied desserts is a smooth, cooling milk chocolate semi freddo. You can try selected Bissinger's chocolates in "Confection Flights," and several liqueurs are available as shots served in a cup made of chocolate.

Leanna Russo isn't the biggest fan of eating sugar and sweets, but that doesn't mean her Benton Park bakery isn't topnotch. In fact, a light hand with the sweet stuff is what makes Russo's pastries so darn good. The lemon meringue torte with a pine-nut crust and browned Swiss meringue is a lovely blend of sweet and tart with a savory backbeat. Be sure to try the peanut-butter bar, which knocks Reese's out of the park. Savory dishes, including a daily lunch special and made-from-scratch biscuits topped with peppery sausage gravy, are also available.

  • Cafe Cioccolato

816 Olive St. St. Louis - Downtown

    314-345-1200

A Snickers bar and a Coke would be an odd, out of place even, accompaniment to enjoying a relaxing seat in the lush, historic lobby of the Paul Brown building. Fortunately, connected to that lobby, chocolate aficionados can find a more apt taste of toothsome delights. Behind the glass cases in Cafe Cioccolato, in a rainbow of browns and reds and yellows and whites, sit rows of decadent little treasures brought over from the continent, each one labeled with its region of export. Try a French caramel or a Swiss truffle or taste a Belgian Neuhaus creation made from only pure cocoa butter. Cioccolato also offers a few bites made in-house, such as their chocolate-covered caramel coins. The chocolatier sells espressos and hot chocolate in addition to their saccharine morsels, and their 5 p.m.-to-7 p.m. happy hour features beer, wine and liquor, and other specially prepared food. Patrons can sit in one of the cafés large, comfy chairs and taste a bit of sweetness from the Cocoa Belt.

  • Cafe Ventana

Here you can have a light lunch of excellent hot grilled sandwiches, sip a cappuccino while you study for the LSAT or even blot out a bad day with real-deal absinthe. Located on the edge of Central West End and midtown, the cafe adds a touch of artsy French style to an otherwise industrial stretch. Thanks to the patio and annex, there are always plenty of tables and comfy chairs to occupy everyone from neighborhood SLU students and businesspeople to casual passerby. The friendly staffers take their coffee seriously, but that's just the beginning. Sure, you can caffeinate at Cafe Ventana, but you can also brunch, booze and stave off boredom with trivia, movie nights and live music. On any given night, tables get pushed aside for everything from punk to indie rock -- just a couple of the flavors offered at Cafe Ventana after hours.

  • Companion Bake House & Cafe

    8143 Maryland Ave. Clayton

    314-352-4770

How do the folks at Companion possess the time or patience to turn out such lovely breakfast and lunch items at their Clayton eatery? Haven't they enough to do, turning out some 13,000 pounds of breads and pastries daily for dozens of St. Louis restaurants? Yet here's a scrumptious "Jive Turkey" sandwich (that's turkey, prosciutto, white Cheddar, roasted yellow onion and chili mayo on country white bread), there's a gorgeous slice of veggie pizza -- and let's not forget the eggs and French toast at breakfast. And you'll likely want to take home a treat: The bakery case boasts beautiful cakes, and a loaf of bread (in styles like rye batard, ciabatta, pumpkin-cranberry, or rosemary-olive oil) goes for about five bucks.
