  • Crepes, Etc.

52 Maryland Plaza St. St. Louis - Central West End

    314-367-2200

Upon arrival at Crepes, etc., diners order at the long service counter, take a number and seat themselves while they await their food's arrival. As expected, the menu features crepes aplenty, but other options include French toast, pancakes and a variety of omelets. The menu divides crepes into savory or sweet, with the former featuring playful choices such as the Beef...I Must Eat More Beef crepe, which is stuffed with prime rib, sauteed peppers and onions, mushrooms and mozzarella. Sweet crepes are of the more straightforward variety (think: Nutella and crepe Suzette).

  • The Cup-Central West End

28 S. Maryland Plaza St. Louis - Central West End

    314-367-6111

The Cup -- known as the Cupcakery until July 2010 -- offers the Platonic ideal of the beloved birthday-party cupcakes of your childhood: perfect cake, moist and flavorful, topped with luscious buttercream. The best cupcake on the regular menu is the "Peanut Butter Cup," whose peanut-butter buttercream tastes exactly like the peanut-butter filling of its namesake candy -- and it comes with a piece of that candy on top. Each week brings one or two special cupcakes. Keep your eyes open for the "Lemon Drop" and "Red Velvet Cake" in particular. Though not as elaborate as some gourmet cupcakes, the Cup's masterpieces are simply divine.

  • Cyrano's

603 E. Lockwood Ave. Webster Groves

    314-963-3232

Just like old times: St. Louis' favorite dessertery has been resurrected, in Webster Groves. A seasonal menu of appetizers ("little plates"), sandwiches, soups, salads and nightly specials provides an ample prelude to the decadent main course (as it were). Before you dig into dessert, sample seared tuna and herb-roasted chicken, both served in European-style portions that won't, um, ruin your appetite. When you're ready for the main event, the old reliable trio of flambéed favorites is still available -- cherries jubilee, and bananas or strawberries Cyrano -- as are the chocolate-encased Cleopatra and (likewise) the World's Fair Eclair. If those don't trip your trigger, choose from the seasonal list of scrumptious pastries.

    314-535-7800

Imagine a soda fountain and lunch counter tucked inside an art deco bar and you might have some idea what awaits you at this midtown joint. Located inside the former Stutz automobile showroom (a few sandwiches are named after models from the long-defunct carmaker), the Fountain on Locust offers soups, sandwiches and ice-cream treats for the kid inside all of us - as well as a few ice-cream martinis for the adults. Standout sandwiches include the "Prosperity Panini," with grilled zucchini and hummus; and the "Royal Grille," a grilled-cheese with slices of Fuji apple. Desserts include decadent sundaes. Ask for two spoons or surrender to your sweet tooth.

  • Fozzie's Sandwich Emporium

1170 S. Big Bend Blvd. Richmond Heights

    314-932-5414

Though a small restaurant, Fozzie's follows the "more is more" principle. There are twenty sandwiches, almost all of them overstuffed, as well as burgers, hot dogs and gyros (and salads, appetizer dips and milkshakes, too). There is the B.A.B.T.L. (bacon and bacon, lettuce and tomato) with a half-pound of bacon, and the awesome "Big Bend Mafia," with Italian-seasoned beef and salsiccia. The signature dish might be the Juicy Lucy, a Minneapolis-St. Paul specialty that consists of a cheeseburger with the cheese stuffed inside the patty. The salads, featuring with vegetables from the restaurant's own garden, are very good.

Toppings include fresh fruit, nuts and crumbled candy. Be careful: Those all-you-can-eat ounces add up at the cash register.

No need to pond-jump to Florence for a taste of frozen dairy at its finest; Chris and Dana Sherman made the trip for you. A vacation to Italy planted the seeds for this gelato shop, a welcome addition to the Wash. Ave. streetscape. Gelato flavors -- about a dozen, showcased in glass-paned coolers in luscious heaps -- include bacio (chocolate hazelnut), tiramisu and zabaglione. If you need to lay a foundation for dessert, Gelateria offers a selection of panini-style sandwiches.

  • Gelato di Riso-Warson Woods

9905 Manchester Road, Warson Woods Kirkwood

    314-962-0660

CLOSED Though gelato isn't made with cream (either whole milk or water is used), it tastes sweeter, denser and lusher than the ice cream Americans are accustomed to, because less air is churned into the stuff. And nobody in St. Louis does gelato better than Suzy Reis. For example, she offers two different versions of cherry gelato -- one cream-based, the other more like a sorbet -- and sources two different kinds of cherries (from Michigan and from Door County, Wisconsin) with which to make 'em. (For an added flavor jolt, consider popping an extra 50 cents for a shot of balsamic syrup on your gelato.)
