  • The Side Bar

1317 Washington Ave St. Louis - Washington Avenue

    314-621-7376

Any neighborhood strip worth strolling down has a good sports bar for enthusiasts to retreat to, and the Side Bar provides just that for Washington Avenue. Sip on an infused vodka or bloody mary to go with some standard bar fare including burgers, appetizers and St. Louis-style pizza. Go all out for breakfast with a side bar slinger, or have a wholesome dinner of lasagna, meat loaf or baked grouper. No sports bar experience would be complete with a big screen to catch the game on, and the Side Bar's spacious dining room has a projector feeding in the action.

  • Sump Coffee

3700 S. Jefferson Ave. St. Louis - South City

    917-412-5670

Sump Coffee treats coffee like a sculptor handles a chunk of clay -- patient, calculated movements that result in a veritable work of art. So, yeah, this is not the place for a quick pit stop, or venti cappuccinos or lattes. Head barista Scott Carey carefully approaches each drink with the utmost care. For example, he'll brew El Salvadoran coffee roasted by Chicago's Intelligentsia using a Chemex (glass) brewer, while, on the other hand, he'll brew a Panamanian coffee from the same source in a ceramic Beehive coffee dripper. We didn't really follow that, either, but the end result is there for the tasting: rich flavor and a powerful rush of caffeine.

  • Urban Eats Cafe & Bakery

3301 Meramec St. St. Louis - South City

    314-558-7580

Community hub Urban Eats is a stylish coffeehouse and eatery smack in the middle of Meramec, Dutchtown's version of a main drag. The place is clean and bright, and staffed by amiable baristas. Urban Eats recently doubled their square footage and expanded their offerings to include a full bar and juice bar, in addition to coffee, local art and choose-your-own-adventure sandwiches and wraps. The space doubles as the Urban Arts Collective, which promotes local artists and offers them a chance to show their work at Urban Eats' free gallery.

  • Wittmond's Restaurant

    108 Main St., Brussels Grafton/ Godfrey/ Alton

    618-883-2345

No dining destination better captures the nostalgia of a drive along the Great River Road than the Wittmond Hotel. Its American-style, home-cooked classics and general-store vibe transport guests to a time when the chicken was fried in lard, fresh-made sausage meant the family was missing a pet pig and no one had ever heard of GMO corn. This is not complicated haute cuisine, but stick-to-your-ribs home cooking like Grandma would've made. While rustic farm-to-table cooking is all the rage in the trendiest urban restaurants, little gems like the Wittmond Hotel have been offering this cuisine for years in its original setting. It's worth the trip to experience an original.
