  • Arcelia's

    1928 S. 12th St. St. Louis - Lafayette Square

    314-241-1378

Call it Arcelia’s version 3.0. The original Arcelia’s closed in 2010 after a twenty-year run, first in Soulard, later anchoring the northeast corner of Lafayette Park. The family of founder Arcelia Sanchez, who died in 2003, has reopened the restaurant, bringing back much of the original menu, in a new location in Soulard. The menu is brief and features crowd pleasers like enchiladas, chiles rellenos, pork in a chile-verde sauce and quesadillas. The tortilla chips, fried in-house and served piping hot, are a highlight, as is carne en su jugo: a soup of flank steak and pinto beans in a flavorful tomatillo-bacon broth.

  • Atomic Cowboy

4140 Manchester Ave St. Louis - The Grove

    314-775-0775

A decade ago when Chip Schloss finished rehabbing the building at 4140 Manchester, Atomic Cowboy became a pioneer of the Grove's booming nightlife scene. Today, Atomic Cowboy is known for music performances every night of the week and a creative fresh mex menu. Food includes sweet potato empanadas with jalapeno cream, gaucho fries topped with chili con carne, Mexican spaghetti with chorizo meatballs, and all the burritos, enchiladas and quesadillas you can imagine. With a huge outdoor patio and firepit in addition to a full bar both inside and outside, Atomic Cowboy is a suitable place to let loose all year round. Food and drink specials are offered every Monday through Friday from 4-7 p.m. at happy hour. Other drink specials include $1 PBR nights and $0.50 Stag nights. Brunch is also served every Sunday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and features huevos benedict with smoked salmon, a Mexican slinger, tres leches french toast and hot Kaldi's coffee to wash it all down.

  • Cantina Laredo

    7710 Forsyth Blvd. Clayton

    314-725-2447

Cantina Laredo in Clayton is the first St. Louis location of the Dallas-based upscale Tex-Mex chain. The restaurant’s large, modern bar has quickly become a happy-hour hot spot, pouring stiff drinks for the area’s business clientele. On the food side, diners can expect modernized, fusion versions of Mexican and Tex-Mex dishes, anchored by a large selection of fajitas and enchiladas. The restaurant’s signature appetizer, the “Top Shelf Guacamole,” is prepared tableside, with accoutrements added to one’s preferences. The “Enchiladas Veracruz” features two tortillas stuffed with a Mexican version of chicken spinach dip, and the “Costillas Con Fajita” is a gigantic, searing hot platter of ribs, steak and chicken, large enough for three diners. A must-try is the “Torta de Carnitas,” smoked pork topped with goat cheese, apricot jam and an over-easy egg. Though it’s difficult to save room for dessert, one must find a way to manage: The Mexican apple pie, finished with brandy butter tableside on a searing-hot cast-iron skillet is a scrumptious end to the meal.

  • Chava's

925 Geyer Ave. St. Louis - Soulard

    314-241-5503

This Mexican restaurant rose from the ruins of perennial Soulard dive Mike & Min's, but it wasn't a bad trade-off at all. Chava's menu keeps things short and to the point: tacos, a fajita platter, a burrito, an enchilada, a tostada, etc. The fajita platter and its close appetizer cousins (fajita quesadilla and fajita nachos) are sizzling-steak standouts, as are tacos de Guadalajara, a pair of flash-fried flour tortillas clamped around seasoned ground beef, lettuce, tomato, onion and a clever blend of grated Monterey and Parmesan cheeses. Specify a fresh-fruit margarita and choose from ten different flavors.

There are chains you loathe, chains you can tolerate and chains you secretly love. Then there's Chipotle, which you should put on a pedestal and offer sacrifices to. The burritos are big, yes (though probably not as big as your head), and quickly made to order, but it's Chipotle's commitment to quality that sets it so far above the fast-casual crowd: beef, chicken and pork raised without hormones or antibiotics, piquant salsas, tortillas that hold everything together without being gummy. Hell, even the beans taste better. A few Chipotle fans claim they can make a burrito - already a steal at $5 to $6 - last two meals, but you probably won't believe it until you see it yourself. • Chipotle Mexican Grill

6316 Delmar Blvd., St. Louis University City

    314-678-3200

Known for its clean, minimalist atmosphere and hefty foil-wrapped burritos the size (and weight) of a small infant, Chipotle pioneered the fast-casual, assembly line Mexican food genre that's since grown to encompass chains like Qdoba and Baja Fresh. The protocol in St. Louis and elsewhere? Diners proceed single-file down the line and orchestrate the construction of their burrito, tacos (soft or crunchy), rice bowl, or salad with proteins including braised pork carnitas and grilled chicken or steak. Rice, beans, and a kaleidoscope of salsas from mild to sinus-clearing, plus garnishes like sour cream, guacamole and lettuce, complete the picture. Once heavily backed by McDonald's, Chipotle broke away from the fast food megacorp in 2006 and has since gained favor with customers by sourcing all-natural, hormone-free meats and even some local produce. It hired celebrity chef Nate Appleman as "culinary manager" in 2010 to man the New York test kitchen and work on research and development to keep Chipotle on the forefront of food trends. • Chuy Arzola's

3701 Lindell Blvd. St. Louis - Midtown

    314-644-4430

One of St. Louis' most beloved restaurants returns, but the new incarnation of Eddie Arzola's Dogtown Tex-Mex joint isn't your father's Chuy Arzola's. Literally: Arzola is still involved, but the driving force is his son Coby, along with Café Ventana owners Ami Grimes and Gurpreet Padda. The menu features crowd-pleasing favorites: tacos, enchiladas, burritos and the "secret recipe" fajitas. In general, roasted pork is an excellent choice for any meal, and the enchiladas suizas (chicken with Chihuahua cheese and cilantro-spiked sour cream) are a nice change from good ol' chicken enchiladas with ranchero sauce.

  • El Borracho

2001 Locust St. St. Louis - Downtown

    314-588-0055

Located at 20th and Locust streets, in the former home of Nectar and the Rocket Bar before that, El Borracho combines the look and design of a lively cantina with the drinks and food of a resort and still maintains the familiar center bar with tables along the circumference. The menu offers the usual suspects in Mexican fare - quesadillas, burritos and tacos, but everything is served family style. Tacos can be ordered pancho or gringo style, depending on preference.

  • Flaco's Cocina

8400 Delmar Blvd., University City Ladue

    314-395-4343

A homage to the late, lamented Flaco's Tacos, which introduced St. Louis to the fish taco. You can get fish tacos here - the tempura-battered are best, served with tart cabbage slaw and a mildly spicy sauce in soft flour tortillas. But you might also enjoy this tiny joint's takes on other Mexican and Tex-Mex favorites. Enchiladas are served with a rich, complex mole, as are the surprisingly fiery chiles rellenos. A chorizo kebab pairs the spicy sausage with a delicious saffron barbecue sauce and creamy mashed sweet potatoes.
