  • Andria's Steakhouse

6805 Old Collinsville Road, O'Fallon Belleville/ Fairview Heights

    618-632-4866

Steak lovers flock to this rambling old farmhouse for good reason -- its eponymous marinade results in a savory searing on the outside of the meat (and seafood, too) and an incredible juiciness on the inside. Offerings also include a succulent prime rib and daily seafood specials.
  • Andria's Steakhouse-Chesterfield

    16125 Chesterfield Parkway W. Chesterfield

    636-530-9800

The second location of the popular O'Fallon, Illinois, restaurant brings classic steak-house charm - and Andria's famous steak sauce - to west county. The menu is traditional steak-house cuisine: shrimp cocktail, baked potato and lots and lots of steak. Strip and rib-eye steaks bring a great balance of flavor and tenderness. All steaks, as well as the mammoth pork chop, are brushed with the legendary sauce. Though not cheap, Andria's is more casual and value-minded than many old-school steakhouses: Entrées come with a side and a large salad, and feel free to wear jeans.

  • Ariake Japanese Steakhouse

McMenamy Road & Mid Rivers Mall Drive St. Peters

    636-397-1144

With its origins strongly rooted in St. Louis' former top-flight Japanese restaurant, Robata, Ariake Japanese Steakhouse combines a teppanyaki steak house, where your meal is cooked at your table, with a full sushi bar and a Thai restaurant. While the Japanese menu focuses mostly on the various meats and seafood that will be sizzled right where you sit, such as their filet mignon or lobster, the Thai side turns its culinary attention more toward the sauces and curries that flavor your dish. In addition to the usual pad Thai and stir-fried items, Ariake's Thai menu includes a crispy catfish and garlic frog legs with a spicy sauce. Their sushi menu offers sashimi, rolled sushi and a variety of specialty rolls.
  • Bacana Brasil

    16123 Chesterfield Parkway W. Chesterfield

    636-532-6969

Bacana Brasil is a churrascaria: You sit at your table, and costumed "gauchos" bring you meat until you tell them to stop. Most selections at least offer the simple pleasures of grilled meat. Standouts include juicy, tender top-round sirloin and super-size lamb shish kebabs. Side dishes and salads are available from the salad bar and hot buffet -- but considering how much meat you'll ingest, you probably shouldn't visit these more than once. Everything but drinks and dessert (if you can manage it) are included in the all-you-can-eat price.

  • The Best Steak House

516 N. Grand Blvd. St. Louis - Grand Center

    314-535-6033

Local diners looking for the best steak house in town are in luck, on account of one of them letting it be known right there in their name for us. Located on Grand Boulevard across from the fabulous Fox Theatre, where adjectives rule, the Best Steak House tells you what to expect before you walk in the door. Their menu, not surprisingly, features steaks, porterhouse, T-bone, strip, rib eye and sirloin. Best Steak also serves sandwiches, a common carryout item for the lunch crowd, holding items such as fried fish, gyro meat, chicken, pork and, naturally, steak. Other menu options include salads, chicken strips and, when available, chili. Diners will find a casual atmosphere where no reservations are required at Best Steak House, but they do recommend calling ahead for faster carryout service.

  • Big A's on the Riverfront

308 N. Main St. St. Charles

    636-949-9900

The ceilings are very, very high at St. Charles' Big A's on the Riverfront, which is a good thing: It affords more room on the very, very tall walls for the eatery's collection of beer and sports memorabilia. The restaurant serves good, satisfying bar fare - burgers, chicken Phillies, some pretty amazing waffle fries - and hosts drink specials most nights of the week. The venue has a clean, friendly vibe and cheery service, making it a fine spot for a bite, a drink, or both.

  • The Big Muddy Food and Spirits

3761 New Town Blvd. St. Charles

    636-724-7920

Rising from the ashes under new management after being temporarily shuttered is The Big Muddy Food and Spirits, located on St. Charles' New Town Boulevard just off highway 370. The Big Muddy has a slightly upscale country-club feel, typically drawing well-heeled suburbanites in their thirties or older. In addition to a full menu including its famous hand-made pizzas, the Big Muddy is also known for its chocolately "muddy martini" and a wide assortment of wines and high-end mixed drinks. The Big Muddy's generous daily happy hour lasts from 2 to 7 p.m., with $10 buckets, $4.50 Jack Daniels cocktails, $4 Skyy Vodka cocktails, $3 well cocktails, $3 house wines, $2 bottles and $1.50 drafts. They also host the occasional cleverly named special event. Muddy-ritaville, anyone? Well, what about Cinco de Muddy?

  • Brazikat Brazilian Steak & Seafood House

172 Carondelet Plaza, St. Louis Clayton

    314-727-1007

Brazikat Brazilian Steak & Seafood House, which occupies a spacious address in Clayton’s Carondelet Plaza development, is a churrascaria, the all-you-can-eat Brazilian steakhouse. More precisely, Brazikat calls itself (and prices itself) like a churrascaria. In fact, the Brazikat experience is no more indicative of Brazilian culture than a bikini wax. The meats, often poorly cut by the “gaucho” servers, taste overwhelmingly of mesquite smoke. As for the seafood, the less said, the better. The "35-item gourmet food bar" is a salad bar. It does not always have 35 items, either — though maybe you’re supposed to count the two containers of croutons separately.

  • Bugatti's Steak & Pasta

    1 Ameristar Blvd. St. Charles

    636-940-4471

Located inside Ameristar Casino, Bugatti's serves up steaks, pastas and seafood in a dark wood-covered dining room. The menu items reflect Bugatti's Italian inspiration, with pasta pomodoro and veal marsala among the options. And, if you win big, go ahead and add king crab legs or lobster tail to your meal for an extra charge. Bugatti's also boasts an extensive and varied wine list.
  • Capone's Restaurant

35 N. Gore Ave., St. Louis Webster Groves

    314-222-1355

  • Carmine's Steak House

20 S. Fourth St. St. Louis - Downtown

    314-241-1631

Top-quality meat and a bona fide big-city atmosphere, but you certainly pay for the privilege. The restaurant takes up most of the ground floor of what used to be the four-story, stainless-steel-clad American Zinc Building. Be sure to take note of the miracle of engineering -- more than 50 feet of unbroken space, made possible with something called Vierendeel trusses -- that creates an open, modern atmosphere, tempered by a giant original mural across one wall. Great steaks -- even better if you're on an expense account.

  • Charcoal House

9855 Manchester Road, Rock Hill Webster Groves

    314-968-4842

Good old-fashioned neighborhood steakhouse where expertly grilled beef and chops are the tried-and-true standards. It may appear that most of the people in the place are regulars, but that's because even first-timers are treated that way, so just pretend you've been coming here for years.

  • Citizen Kane's Steak House

    133 W. Clinton Place Kirkwood

    314-965-9005

The name is in fact the owner's last name, and the 1880s Victorian mansion that houses this classic steakhouse doesn't overdo the tie-in with its selection of movie memorabilia. The menu is dominated by steaks and chops, but there's also a stately chicken Xanadu, as well as a daily fresh-fish special and the "Daily Inquirer" special. The fish is on the same high-quality plane as the meat, and although nothing on the menu really pushes the envelope in terms of innovation, that's not what you go to a steakhouse for anyway.
