  • A'mis Italian Restaurant - O'Fallon North

1266 Bryan Road, Saint Charles O'Fallon, MO

    636-980-3333

A neighborhood joint that offers pizza in four different styles: St. Louis (naturally), Chicago, New York and New York-Manhattan. That last distinction is crucial: Bite into a massive slice of the greasy, goopy Manhattan-style pizza and you'll swear you're in Brooklyn or Queens. Order anything else and you'll swear you're in Rock Hill, but you'll be happy to be there. A'mis also features a fairly extensive menu of pastas, sandwiches and dinner entrées. A great place to take the family for a weekday diner, and the ideal spot for that lunchtime pizza fix.

  • Anthonino's Taverna

2225 Macklind Ave. St. Louis - The Hill

    314-773-4455

The menu reflects both the Italian and the Greek heritage of owners Anthony and Rosario Scarato. The selection tilts toward the former, with numerous pizzas and pastas available, while the Greek board focuses on the cuisine's standbys, such as saganaki (flaming cheese), dolmathes (stuffed grape leaves) and gyros. The pizza is very good: the crust thick, with a slight chew and a teasing sweetness; the sauce lightly applied beneath a blanket of melting mozzarella; the toppings ideally proportioned. The gyro is also good and a great value. A welcoming spot with a wonderfully friendly staff.

  • Basso

7036 Clayton Ave., St. Louis Richmond Heights

    314-932-7818

Basso is Italian for low, and this restaurant is located in the cavernous basement of the Restaurant at the Cheshire. Part of the multimillion-dollar renovation of the Cheshire hotel on the western edge of the city, Basso boasts as its chef Patrick Connolly, a St. Louis native who made his name (including a James Beard Foundation award) in Boston and New York City before returning home. His menu is “Italian gastropub,” which in practice means excellent wood-fired pizzas and rustic pasta dishes. The “McDowell’s Golden Arcs,” with speck, delicata squash and Fontina, is a standout pizza. Among the pastas, try the mafalda, thin ribbons of pasta tossed with a beef and pork ragù, pecorino romano and breadcrumbs.

Dishes draw inspiration from Mediterranean cuisines, not only European, but also North African and Middle Eastern. Crab cakes are spiced with za'atar and served with a harissa aioli; falafel is served in bite-size "popcorn" form. The menu is dominated by small plates, but there are also sandwiches, soups and flatbread pizzas, as well as a few pasta dishes and traditional entrées. Weather permitting, the patio is a popular seat.

  • Biggie's

3332 Watson Road St. Louis - South City

    314-781-0060

A neighborhood bar & grill in the finest St. Louis tradition. The pork chop is the trademark dish: It weighs in at one pound and requires 25 minutes to cook. Burgers and sandwiches are satisfying, especially the veal parm. The menu includes steaks, seafood and Italian dishes, including pizza, in the Provel-intensive St. Louis style. (Not a fan of T-ravs? Biggie's might convert you.) Barbecue ribs are the weekend specialty. The atmosphere is friendly, and there's more sports memorabilia on the walls than you could study in a dozen visits.
